Sisyphus meets the Fern Pass.
July 17th 2023 - Germany and Austria
In Greek mythology Sisyphus, the king of Ephyra, got on the wrong side of Hades, God of the dead and king of the underworld, by cheating death twice.
By way of punishment Hades forced Sisyphus to push a vast boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down just as it neared the top. A task he got to repeat for eternity.
That is exactly how we felt trying to get over the Fern Pass from Germany into Austria.
From Oberkirch, you remember Oberkirch…
…from Oberkirch, over the Fern Pass, to Nassereith in Austria was, according to the Sat-nav, a mere three-and-a-half hours.
As you know, if you read my last blog, eight hours later we then spent a night at a lovely little campsite, still in Germany.
The next day dawned bright and we were encouraged that according to the sat-nav, Nassereith was now a mere one-and-a-half ours away.
“I think it’s getting further away!” Said Mrs P two hours later and still in Der Fatherland. Sat in a traffic jam of immense but apparently seasonally normal proportions I couldn’t help but notice that all the (German) cars ahead of us had roof boxes and all the (German) cars going in the opposite direction had no roof boxes. Is there some kind of illicit cross border trade going on? I shall check the shops for cheap ‘only used once’ roof boxes and let you know.
After about three hours we finally made it to our destination of Nassereith and the lovely family run campsite at Camping Rossbach.
We’ve been here before. The rock climbing area is amazing. No climbing today though, just a walk and a beer.
Tomorrow we hike. Watch this space for more tales of daring do as we tackle cold beers and fight off offers of more coffee and cake.
Then, perhaps we will go climbing.
